Are Hashtags on Instagram Still a Thing?

Yes! Hashtags still serve a purpose on Instagram. Multiple purposes, actually.

  • Hashtags help label your content. Using specific hashtags for specific types of content tells your audience and Instagram what your posts are about.
  • It helps Instagram decide how and where to serve your content. Instagram uses hashtags to aggregate content results when users search for something via the Instagram Explore page.

Instagram has begun using keywords in caption text to help serve relevant content (which is a good thing!) but hashtags still provide a layer of context and help the cause. Think of hashtags like SEO for Instagram; they help optimize your content so that it’s discoverable.

Why Should Real Estate Agents Use Instagram Hashtags?

 

Real estate agents on Instagram want to grow their audience and boost engagement with their content. Instagram hashtags can help them do just that.

Using the right hashtags (more on that in a second) can get your content in front of the right people — the people who have the most interest in it, or who specifically searched for it. 

And who is most likely to engage (like, comment and share) with your Instagram content? People for whom it’s most relevant.

How Many Instagram Hashtags Should Real Estate Agents Use?

 

Ah, the burning question. 

Best practices for how many hashtags to use on Instagram has changed over the years.

Some experts recommend using as many as 30 Instagram hashtags per post — the maximum allowed by Instagram. That’s a lot of work. 

Fortunately for real estate agents, that advice has changed. In fact, Instagram directly advises using only three to five hashtags.

So, how do you choose?

 

What Are the Best Instagram Hashtags for Real Estate Agents?

 

There’s no one-size-fits-all list of hashtags that real estate agents should use on Instagram. In fact, your particular hashtags should be specific to your business.

Generally speaking, Instagram recommends using hashtags that:

  • Are relevant to the theme of your content
  • Are a mix of niche (specific to real estate, or your individual business) and broad, to maximize your discoverability
  • Your audience is already using

 

With that in mind, we recommend (at a minimum) using a hashtag that pinpoints your location, a hashtag that describes your business, and a hashtag that describes the theme of the particular post in question. 

If you’re using five hashtags, you might dedicate the remaining two to a popular real estate industry hashtag and an additional hashtag that describes your content. At least one or two of your hashtags should change from post to post.
