Are you tired of the “new year, new decade” talk yet?
For some people, it’s a fantastic kick in the butt to set goals and tackle the world. But for others, it feels like A LOT of pressure.
So, rather than feeling overwhelmed and following the masses by setting massive goals for 2020, why not set goals from a place that feels good to YOU?
…Not your favourite influencer, not your real estate colleague, but specifically for your business and your life.
4 Steps to Setting Achievable Goals in Your Real Estate Business
The key to setting goals that matter to you is recognizing how unique you are as a REALTOR®. You’ve got your own niche market, your own networking style, and your specific experience. Your business goals SHOULD be different from others in the industry.
Here are four steps you need to craft business goals that align with your priorities.
1. Celebrate How Far You’ve Already Come in Real Estate
To get into the mindset for setting 2020 business goals, first take a step back and look at 2019. Grab a blank piece of paper and a pen, and write down every single accomplishment from the last year.
From growing your Instagram following, to setting up your real estate website, to perfecting your open house marketing strategy – list it all!
Then take a moment to read through all of the awesome things you’ve already done in your real estate business.
Are there any items that jump out as the things you are most proud of?
If so, take a look at what area of your business that was in and ask why that mattered most to you. Maybe boundaries around work hours and family time were a huge struggle, but you finally implemented a system that worked. Or maybe your marketing strategy finally made its way online and you figured out all the tech yourself.
Celebrate your wins! And then jot down the area of your business you’re most proud of in terms of your accomplishments (we’ll use this later).
2. Set Personalized Goals for Your Real Estate Business
Now that you’re in a positive mindset about everything you’ve conquered in your real estate business thus far, it’s time to look into the future.
You need to have a little time and space away from your day-to-day tasks to give yourself the freedom to explore what you want from your business in 2020. That means no social media scrolling and no input from others – just you and your priorities.
Take a quick look back at your 2019 list and remind yourself what areas of your business you were most proud of last year. This trick helps you stay true to what’s really important to you, which also makes it easier to stick to your goals.
Now, could you improve those key areas even further?
What, specifically, would that look like for you?
If you’ve maxed out your goals in those priority areas, move on to the next most important area by again referencing your 2019 successes.
Remember in school when you learned about SMART goal setting? Make sure you apply the same principles here, so that your goals are Specific, Measureable, Actionable, Realistic and Time-Specific.
Here are a few ideas of personalized goals, which aren’t necessarily typical for real estate agents, but could be just right for you.
This is the year you…
- Get on social media, find your first 1,000 Instagram followers, and start talking about your business in the online space.
- Schedule your work hours and stick to them, so that you can be more present both as a REALTOR® and in your personal life.
- Implement a new morning routine to kickstart your workday.
- Reboot your marketing strategy to generate better leads for your business.
3. Keep Your 2020 Goals Front and Centre
This might come as a surprise to you, but most people don’t like change. Our subconscious mind resists change, which can make it challenging to stick to our goals.
To rewire our brain for what we really want this year, we need to put our priorities front and centre.
Remind yourself of your business goals each and every day by posting them in places you look frequently:
- Put a post-it note on your whiteboard or desktop computer with your goals
- Write your goals on the bathroom mirror using a marker
- Frame your 2020 goals and place the list on your desk
- Make some quick graphics with your goals written on it, and use it as the lock screen on your phone
4. Harness the Power of Visualization to Reach Your Goals
Lastly, you can use visualization to supercharge your efforts in reaching your 2020 business goals. You may already use visualization to help set yourself up for each work day, as you picture how it unfolds.
Using your specific real estate goals, close your eyes and picture what it’ll look like at the end of the year when you’ve achieved your #1 goal.
Answer the following questions for yourself:
- Where are you located?
- What are your surroundings?
- What’s different about your life?
- How do you feel?
- What are you doing?
By visualizing the end point on a daily or weekly basis, you are showing yourself what you can do if you stick with your goals. You’re actually giving yourself a “why” behind the hard work to come, which will effectively propel you to the finish line.
